Sketching Journey Tips: Part 5

October 4, 2009

Walt Disney Concert Hall

The Process continues

The object you decided to sketch first will set the scale of your composition from which you will then scale and sketch all additional objects. Keep adding objects in this manner while being faithful to your vanishing points. Scale your new objects as they relate one to another. I found this technique more manageable than trying to outline the entire composition and then going into details. In this sketch of Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall roof garden, I started by sketching the lamp post first. Next I sketched the tree (to the right) together with the floor pattern to establish my perceived horizon and vanishing points. The rose fountain (dedicated to Lilly Disney) was then sketched next, followed easily by the walls of the building, the other plants, and finally the shading of the overall composition.
