Sketching Journey Tips: Part 1

September 24, 2009

Equipment

To get started you need a sketch book and some pens. I recommend starting with a 4” by 6” artist’s sketchbook of about 50 pages, hard cover and perfect bound. Perfect binding allows a two-page spread, (see Pavilon Suisse) while spiral binding restricts you to a single page sketch. I prefer pages without lines or dots, with thickness of 150 g, acid free cartridge paper, which should prevent ink soaking through to the other side. I would also suggest using Staedtler Mars professional felt pen; the ink flows smoothly; various nib thicknesses are available, and you can create varying line thickness by pressing on the nib while sketching.
